What is fiber?

As a futureproof technology, fiber transmits data over long distances at the speed of light. The advantages are numerous, including an ultra-fast and much more stable Internet connection as well as an ultra-low latency.

Proximus is modernizing its network (teaming up with other partners such as Fiberklaar and Unifiber) and is gradually replacing its current copper cables with fiber cables. And unlike most other operators, Proximus installs fiber until the inside of its customers' homes to guarantee the best possible performance, today and tomorrow. Ultimately, the Proximus copper network will be completely replaced by this new technology.

Thanks to a close collaboration with the construction sector, most new housing estates and apartment buildings are swiftly connected to our fiber network.

What is 10 Gbps technology?

Currently, the standard for "ultra-fast" or "Gigabit" Internet service is up to 1 Gigabit per second (or Gbps).

Proximus recently launched this 10 Gbps technology and thus allows you to enjoy the fastest Internet in the country, with speeds of up to 8.5 Gbps for downloading and 1 Gbps for uploading. And that’s just the beginning! By opting for this future-proof technology, you are well prepared for the future.

While a 1 Gbps connection allows you to download a 30 GB file in 4 minutes, 10 Gbps technology allows you to do so in only 24 seconds. So you can imagine the difference!

Do all operators offer the same fiber connection?

Some operators, such as VOO or Telenet, use fiber cables on part of their network, but fit a conventional coaxial (or coax) cable for the last section, the connection in the homes. Proximus, on the other hand, is the first Belgian operator to install fiber from end to end, right into its customers' homes. Having the fiber cable directly connected to your home means that you have your own cable, which you do not share with your neighbours, so are completely independent of any external interference factors. This makes a big difference, as you benefit from an ultra-powerful connection in terms of speed and stability.

What speeds can I expect with Proximus fiber?

With Proximus fiber, you surf the fastest Internet in Belgium and choose the Internet experience that suits your needs:

• Flex+ Mega Fiber, ideal for homeworkers and streamers with download speeds of up to 500 Mbps and upload speeds of up to 500 Mbps: high-speed Internet to meet the needs of multiple users with equal download and upload speeds.
• Flex+ Giga Fiber, ideal for families with download speeds of up to 2 Gbps and upload speeds of up to 2 Gbps: giga-fast Internet to meet the needs of multiple simultaneous users.
• Flex+ Ultra Fiber, ideal for large families and gamers with download speeds of up to 8.5 Gbps and upload speeds of up to 8 Gbps: the fastest Internet available in Belgium both in download and in upload to meet the needs of the most demanding Internet users.

Please note that in certain specific cases, your building's wiring may only allow you to benefit from maximum speeds of 1 Gbps/500 Mbps. For further information, please contact your building manager or landlord.

Do I really need such speeds?

If you're wondering who needs these speeds, you might be surprised! Today, 1 Gbps has become the norm but we are asking more and more from our Internet connection. The needs are constantly increasing and with the technological evolutions (4K, 8K, virtual reality, …) and the numerous connected objects that are developing at a lightning speed, fiber technology is the solution. It allows you to meet the current needs but also to prepare for the next 70 years. It not only allows you to be more efficient but also to save time.

Fiber has been installed in my street, does it mean that I benefit from it?

No, the fact that fiber has been installed in your street does not mean that you automatically benefit from it. To take advantage of all its benefits, your home must be connected to the fiber network which means that an appointment must be made with a technician to install fiber in your home.

If you are already a Proximus fiber customer and you want to benefit from 10 Gbps technology, your current hardware must be replaced. An installation appointment will need to be scheduled with a technician to set up your Internet Box+ and your new ONT box, which is used to connect your box to the fiber network. Any Wi-Fi Boosters you might have will also have to be replaced by Wi-Fi Boosters+.

How to ask for fiber as a tenant?

As a tenant, all you have to do is submit your request to Proximus. The landlord cannot oppose the choice of operator, nor the installation of fiber at the request of the tenant. We nevertheless advise you to inform the landlord.

In a building in co-ownership, all owners will normally have already been notified of the arrival of fiber in the building through the general assembly or by the syndic/building manager.
