Why should you recycle your cell phone?
Besides the ecological aspect, there is an important human aspect. Among other things, these raw materials are extracted from mines in the Congo. In the process, things like exploitation, corruption and war are unfortunately still daily occurrences.
Did you know?
Only 5% of all old mobile phones are recycled. In other words, an estimated 3 million old cell phones lie forgotten in drawers in Belgium alone. This is a shame, because 90% of the materials in these old phones can be reused. To give you an idea: recycling these devices alone yields 30 tons of copper
That is why Proximus launched its recycling program in 2019 to call on as many individuals and companies as possible to participate in this urban mining. Proximus has set a goal of collecting 130,000 phones by 2023 and recycle them thanks to its collaboration with Out Of Use, Brainscape and Umicore. It's high time to take action, bring back your old smartphones and tablets and get others involved!
