Roaming in the EU Zone

Good news, in the EU zone countries you can use your national mobile plan in the same way as in Belgium.

  • EU zone countries + United Kinkgdom, Norway, Monaco, and Andorra.
  • Switzerland and Turkey are not part of the roaming in the EU zone.

Roaming in the United Kingdom and Norway

You don’t have to pay additional roaming costs when you use your mobile business plan in the United Kingdom and Norway. These countries are part of the EU zone so you can use your national mobile plan in the same way as in Belgium.

Roaming outside of the EU Zone

Avoid extra roaming costs with the Daily Roaming Pass

When you start using your mobile plan outside of the EU zone countries then a Daily Roaming Pass is automatically activated.

For a fixed daily price you can call, text and use data like you would do in Belgium, without any unexpected charges. A Daily Roaming Pass is a service for Proximus customers.

Roaming in Switzerland

When you start using your mobile plan in Switzerland then a Daily Roaming Pass is automatically activated.

Difference between roaming and international calls/SMS

Roaming

Calling, texting, and surfing when you are outside of Belgium

Roaming is when you are outside of Belgium and you call, text or surf with your Proximus mobile plan. For example, if you are in Spain and you use your mobile data or call to Belgium.

International calls/SMS

Calling or texting from Belgium to other countries

When you call or text from Belgium to a foreign number then international rates apply. For example, if you call or text from Belgium to Spain or Marocco.

Medium-sized and large companies

Do you have more than 9 employees?

Customers of medium-sized and large companies have other types of mobile plans and other rates for roaming, calling and texting abroad, than self-employed professionals & small businesses.

Private mobile plans

For customers with a private mobile plan

Customers with a private Mobile plan have other rates than business plan customers.

Keep track of your business mobile plan usage

Monitor your usage in the Proximus+ app

The Proximus+ app gives you peace of mind. Get a clear overview of your calls, texts and data usage of your mobile business subscription.

Data alerts by SMS

You will receive free data SMS updates on your data usage in Belgium and abroad. While abroad, your phone expenses are capped at €49.59 (excl. VAT)/month and you will be notified via SMS.

Change or turn off data limits

Want to increase your data limit from €60 to €121? Go to MyProximus in your Proximus+ app or call the 6060 free-toll number (open 6/7).

When roaming services are available in a foreign country, the quality of service offered in that country may differ from that in Belgium due to various local factors related to the technologies available in the visited country: the state of deployment of the latest technology, the coverage of the local network, the available speed, latency, and other external local factors such as topography, etc.

Would you like to know which technologies are available in the country you are visiting? You can consult the list of available technologies in each EU country (+ Iceland, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Norway, and Ukraine), per operator with whom Proximus has a roaming agreement in that country. This indicative list(PDF, 237 KB) is subject to errors and changes. It is regularly updated based on the information provided to Proximus by foreign operators.

The name of the selected roaming network may appear on your screen under a different commercial name, chosen by the foreign operator, independently of Proximus’ will. Furthermore, due to the factors mentioned above (such as network coverage or topography), certain technologies may not be available throughout the entire visited territory.

It is possible that, while roaming, certain local value-added service numbers may not be technically accessible by call or SMS to roaming users, or that some TV content available in Belgium via Pickx may not be available when roaming outside the European Union. Applications or content accessible to local users may also be unavailable to roaming users, for technical or legal reasons.

This can happen when you’re located in the coverage area of an operator active in a neighbouring country to the one you’re visiting. When your SIM card connects to that operator’s network, a welcome message is sent as if you were in that operator’s country, and roaming rates are applied according to that country’s tariff zone. Connecting to a different tariff zone sometimes unintentionally may increase your bill.

To avoid this, you can:

  • Either completely block calls, SMS, and internet connections by enabling flight mode in your device settings.
  • Or, if the country you’re visiting within the EU Zone borders a country in another tariff zone:
    • Request a free opt-out from non-EU Zone roaming via the MyProximus app or by calling 6060, to block connections to such networks while still allowing roaming within the EU Zone.
    • Request an opt-out for internet roaming only outside the EU Zone. This way, you’ll still be able to make calls and send SMS at non-EU Zone rates, and continue roaming within the EU Zone. To block only your internet connection to these non-EU Zone networks, follow the steps via this link.

When roaming, you can monitor your internet usage at any time

  • by sending the word DATA by SMS to 8888: information about the amount of your consumption outside the package while abroad will be sent to you by SMS (sending and receiving free of charge).
  • by accessing the Proximus+ app (using the app consumes data that is deducted from any mobile internet plan or billed if the customer does not have a mobile internet plan or if their plan is exceeded).

Phone calls and data connections made in non-terrestrial zones (e.g. from a boat during a cruise or from an aircraft) use satellite networks that correspond to a different geographical zone and are considered outside the EU Zone. The national rate does not apply to such communications and roaming charges for these communications will be billed.

Connecting to non-terrestrial networks sometimes unintentionally may significantly increase your bill. To avoid this, it is advisable to:

  • For complete blocking of calls, SMS, and internet access via non-terrestrial networks:
    • activate flight mode on your device via your settings
    • or request a free opt-out from non-EU Zone roaming via the MyProximus app or by calling 6060, to block connections to these networks while still allowing EU Zone roaming
  • To block only the internet connection via non-terrestrial networks: request the opt-out for internet connectivity in non-terrestrial zones. In this case, you will still be able to make calls and send SMS via non-terrestrial networks at non-EU Zone rates and continue roaming within the EU Zone. To block only your internet access on non-terrestrial networks, follow the steps via this link

    • Request a free optout from nonEU Zone roaming via the MyProximus app or by calling 6060, to block connections to such networks while still allowing roaming within the EU Zone.
    • Request an optout for internet roaming only outside the EU Zone. This way, you’ll still be able to make calls and send SMS at nonEU Zone rates, and continue roaming within the EU Zone. To block only your internet connection to these nonEU Zone networks, follow the steps via this link.

You can avoid connecting to foreign networks via your device settings:

  • either by deactivating the automatic selection of the network operator and manually selecting Proximus
  • or by removing roaming

To avoid high bills, your mobile internet connection abroad is interrupted when your out-of-bundle data usage abroad reaches €50 excl. VAT.

If you wish to continue surfing, you can request the removal of this limit at your own responsibility. In that case, your mobile internet connection will be interrupted again when usage reaches €100 excl. VAT, unless you have also opted to remove this second limit. In that case, you will continue to surf without limit, entirely at your own responsibility.

You can change this setting at any time.

Value Added Service (VAS) numbers are e.g. premium-rate numbers, freephone numbers or shared cost numbers you can call and/or text to receive access to services like gaming, matchmaking, content editing, information such as the weather forecast , doctors on call, etc.

When you travel outside Belgium (roaming) and you call or text to any VAS number (local, Belgian, EU or non-EU):

  • your national tariff is not applicable
  • the tariff advertised for local users is not applicable
  • higher charges could apply, also for services advertised in the visited country as freephone numbers (these are only free for local users and not for roamers).

VAS numbering ranges vary from country to country. To avoid bad surprise on the bill, you can verify which VAS numbering ranges are subject to increased costs by clicking on https://legalinfo.proximus.be/en/vas The information is available per EU country (including Iceland, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Norway, and Ukraine), but is unfortunately not available for other countries.

In the interests of transparency, when you enter a foreign country, you will receive a text with information on the applicable tariffs for mobile communications in that country, including mobile Internet use. If you do not wish to receive text messages about tariffs, you can request to deactivate this service by calling 6060. You can change this setting at any time.
If the country you are visiting is one of the other 26 EU countries, you will also receive a text informing you of the ways to contact the emergency services in the country you are visiting. For security reasons, you cannot request to deactivate this service and we recommend you save this text message.

Access to the web pages (whether free or paid) is only possible if you or your administrator have not activated a barring on the use of the mobile internet connection ("data barring" or configuration by your company). Consult your company's internal policy. If such a barring has been implemented by yourself, at your request or at the initiative of your administrator, you will have access to these pages but only in WI-FI.

In case of emergency, Proximus recommends to call free of charge the unique European emergency call number 112. This call number is available from any EU country including Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway for local users but also for roamers.

You can check which local alternative means are available to contact emergency services in each EU country (including Iceland, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Norway, and Ukraine) by clicking on https://legalinfo.proximus.be/en/emergency

ublic warning mobile applications are mobile apps that users can download to their smartphone in certain countries in order to receive public alerts in the event of imminent or ongoing major emergencies or disasters in the country visited.

You can check the availability of local public warning mobile applications by EU country (including Iceland, Liechtenstein, Moldova, Norway, and Ukraine) by clicking on https://legalinfo.proximus.be/en/emergency
