Frequently asked questions

Fiber is the technology of the future. The fiber cables transmit data over long distances at the speed of light and thus offer many advantages, including an ultra-fast and much more stable Internet connection than with traditional copper cables.

Proximus is therefore modernising its network by gradually replacing these copper cables by fiber cables. And unlike most other operators who stop at the street, Proximus is installing fiber right into your home, to ensure the best possible performance now and in the future. In the long term, our copper network will be completely replaced by this new technology.

Thanks to fiber, you have a super-fast and stable internet connection, ultra-low latency, a sharper image than ever on all your screens and, above all: you’re ready for the future:

  • Ultra-fast and stable Internet: no interruptions or delays in uploading and downloading, streaming and gaming, regardless of the number of people or devices connected at the same time.
  • Ultra-low latency: when you game online, every millisecond counts. You stay one step ahead of your opponents with fiber.
  • The sharpest image on all your screens: whether on your TV, tablet or smartphone, with fiber you’ll not miss a single detail.
  • Ready for the future: we operate more and more devices in our home via the Internet. Fiber can handle this evolution effortlessly.

Already a Proximus customer? Please note that your current copper cable will have to be replaced by fiber soon anyway in order to meet the ever-increasing need for connectivity and to guarantee you the best performance today and in the future.

Mbps is a measure of the amount of data transferred in one second and is used worldwide to quantify Internet speeds. Mbps stands for megabit per second. Gbps stands for gigabit (or GIGA) per second. A gigabit (or 1 GIGA) is 1,000 megabits - that’s very fast!

When Proximus indicates a speed, it’s almost always the download speed. If 1 GIGA is specified for a Fiber Internet product, this means that the connection can download up to 1 gigabit of data per second. An example: with a connection of 1 gigabit per second, you can download a movie with a volume of 1.5 gigabit in just 12 seconds, while you would need almost 3 minutes at a traditional speed (70 Mbps).

Fiber not only offers you the fastest and most stable Internet connection on the market, it is also the most environmentally friendly solution. Sending data via fiber generates very little energy. And up to 12 times less than with your current copper cable! So switching to fiber is an optimal decision for the environment and the climate. By phasing out our current copper cables, we are currently recycling 500 tons of copper per year and giving it a second life.

Fiber consists of glass made from silicon dioxide. Silicon disoxide is the second most abundant element on earth, after oxygen. It is found in sand, clay, rocks and even water. Its exploitation does not harm the environment.

Compared to copper, the production of fiber does not have a large ecological footprint. According to the industry, the exploitation and production of 2 kg of copper wire (which is used for your current connection) results in the emission of 1,000 kg of CO2, while the emission if fibre is only 0.06 kg.

On the chosen date, a Proximus technician will come by  to replace your current copper cable by a fiber cable. The installation takes between 2 and 4 hours, but the connection will be actually disconnected for only a few minutes, so you'll be able to continue your activities. He will only leave when everything is working smoothly.

More information on www.proximus.be/internetpolicy.

Unlimited fixed Internet: As from 3 TB, your Internet speed will be reduced until the first day of the following month, unless you activate an Extra Volume (300 GB) option free of charge via MyProximus. More information on www.proximus.be/internetpolicy.

Fixed Internet speed: The advertised maximum speed is a theoretical speed. Not all customers can obtain this speed in practice. The download speed in your home mainly depends on the distance between the connection point and the exchange, the availability of VDSL, your computer installation, and the internal cabling. These factors must be optimal to surf the Internet at the maximum speed. Using Wi-Fi can also reduce your Internet speed. Where is fiber available?

Fiber is available in several major Belgian cities and is being rolled out in others. It is also being deployed on industrial estates and in industrial buildings, as well as most new housing estates and apartment buildings.

Thanks to our partnerships with Fiberklaar in Flanders and Unifiber in Wallonia, the roll-out of fiber will pick up speed in the coming months and years, in order to offer you the best network available. The aim is to provide an ultra-fast and stable network that can easily absorb the data traffic that will continue to grow in the years to come.
