Monitoring patients at home thanks to 5G and AI

Sepsis affects 41,000 patients annually in Belgium and has a high mortality rate, especially among the elderly and those with weakened immunity. Therefore, prompt treatment is crucial.
The Sepsis Connect project was initiated by three hospitals together with imec, UGent, and Proximus NXT, with support from the government.
Vital parameters are continuously monitored via 5G, smartwatches, and patches, both at home and in the hospital. Artificial Intelligence (AI) predicts the risk of sepsis within two days.
Thanks to 5G, patients can also be monitored at home, allowing them to stay in their familiar environment.
In the future, the technology can also be used for other conditions to shorten hospital stays.
