This is how your building gets the faster fiber connection

Are you an architect or property developer, and are you planning to include a fiber connection in the houses of apartments you are building? In that case you want to enable the future inhabitants to derive the maximum benefit from the speed that fiber offers. These tips will ensure their network will run at lightning speed.

This is how your building gets the faster fiber connection

The maximum download speed that Proximus offers via fiber is considerably higher than via copper. To guarantee that speed you must ensure that every device can be connected to the network in the best possible conditions. How do you make this possible for your tenants or buyers?

Modem in the living room

In most new homes the technical components for connecting the building to fiber are installed in the laundry room or technical room. Give your tenants and buyers the possibility of connecting their modem in a simple way elsewhere. For instance, in the living room where they watch TV, use the computer and are on the Wi-Fi network the most.

This allows the occupants to connect their computer and TV to the network with a wired connection, giving them the highest download speeds and the most stable connection. In addition, they can connect their smartphones and tablets over Wi-Fi, without walls, panels or cupboards interfering with the connection.

What do you have to provide for an optimal fiber connection?

The endpoints of your connection are installed in the technical area. To enable the modem to be connected in the living room, ask Proximus to install a patch panel with:

  • at least 2 CAT5E or CAT6A cables to the living room.
  • at least 1 CAT5E or CAT6A cable to each other living space where Internet is required.

The modem has 4 Ethernet ports: to the TV, to the decoder, to the landline telephone and to the switch in the technical room. That switch takes care of the Internet connections in the other living spaces. Thanks to the Wi-Fi access points connected to the switch, there is wireless Internet on the other floors or you can connect a printer or a second decoder. You can ask Proximus to install the switch.

Best connection with cable

In optimal conditions, Wi-Fi transfers just under 1 GB of data per second. This speed is drastically reduced if the signal is hampered by walls or obstacles. Furthermore, the distance between the modem and the device also plays a role.

That's why we recommend that devices be connected to the network with cables if possible. The latest Ethernet cables, like Wi-Fi, manage 1 GB per second, only they do so over a distance of more than 100 m. A modern CAT6A cable even manages 10 GB per second.
