9 WhatsApp features you didn't know existed

Tips to get even more out of WhatsApp.

WhatsApp is extremely popular among smartphone users. You can easily stay in contact with other peple and also share photos. Actually, does anybody still text the old-fashioned way?

There are lots of ways to get more out of the app, or customize it the way you want. The 9 tips below will certainly come in handy.

  1. Hide "Last seen"

Would you rather not tell everyone when you last used WhatsApp? No problem!

Tap on the three dots in the top right and then tap "Settings". Next, tap "Account" followed by "Privacy". You can now select who sees things like "Last seen": everyone, only your contacts, or nobody. In the same screen, you can also disable "Read Receipts". These are the "blue ticks" other people see when you've read their message. But remember that if you disable this setting, you won't get Read Receipts from other people. That’s the flip side!

  2. Change your status

Did you know that you can also indicate what you're currently doing in WhatsApp? For example, that you're at work and can't reply. You can select a status or create your own status.

Tap on the three dots in the top right, select "Status" and change your current status.

  3. Mark a chat

Sometimes you read a message but can't reply immediately, and then you completely forget to do so. No worries: you can mark a chat as unread so that it stands out in the list. And you can also mark an unread message as read without opening it.

In the chat list, tap and hold the chat. Next, tap on the three dots and then tap "Mark as unread".

  4. Custom notifications

Did you know that you can set custom ringtones or color notifications for individual contacts or a group chat? This way, important people stand out from the heaps of messages you no doubt receive.

In the chat list, tap and hold the chat. Next, tap on the three dots and then tap "View contact". After that, tap "Custom notifications" and check "Custom notifications". You can now change whatever you want.

  5. Blocking someone

I hope you never have to do this, but sometimes you get messages from people you don't know who bombard you with spam. Or perhaps you want to block an annoying ex. In any case, it’s easy to block a person.

In "Contacts", go to the contact concerned. Open the chat, tap the three dots in the top right and then tap "More". Next, tap "Block". You can later unblock the person in the same way.

  6. Creating shortcuts

Did you know that you can pin a shortcut on your home screen for a chat? This is very handy if you always chat with the same two or three people!

In the chat list, tap and hold the chat. Once the chat is checked, tap on the three dots in the top right and then tap "Create shortcut for chat".

  7. Save data while calling

You can also call with WhatsApp, but you probably knew that already. What you may not know is that you can save data while calling. I'm not sure how the app does this, but I don't notice any difference in quality, so it can't hurt!

Tap on the three dots in the top right and then tap "Settings". Next, tap "Data usage" followed by "Low data usage".

  8. Pop-up window

I find this the handiest feature of them all. You can adjust the settings so that when you receive a new message notification, you don't have to open the app to reply.

Tap on the three dots in the top right and then tap "Settings". Next, tap "Notifications" followed by "Popup notification". Here, you can choose to show the pop-up window when the screen is off, for example.

  9. Transfer your chat history

You've just bought a brand-new smartphone and, understandably, you don't want to lose all your messages on WhatsApp. The good news is that you can easily back up and transfer everything to your new phone!

Tap on the three dots in the top right and then tap "Settings". Next, tap "Chats" followed by "Chat backup". A backup is automatically run every week, but you can also create a new version here by tapping "Backup".
