Configure your private router as a wireless router

Do you have your own router which you would like to use as a Wi-Fi access point or to manage your own network? If so, follow these steps to connect your own router. In both cases, you don't need to make any changes to the b-box.

NB: Proximus does not deal with the connection of your own router. We therefore only recommend these steps if you already have some prior knowledge of setting up a network.

Want a simple Wi-Fi solution? Then don't hesitate to consult these useful tips on Wi-Fi or take a look at our wireless solutions.

Using your router as a Wi-Fi access point

Does your private router have Wi-Fi and you only want to use it to enlarge your Wi-Fi network? Follow these steps:

  1. Connect your private router via the LAN output to the LAN input of the b-box.
  2. Deactivate the DHCP function of your private router.
  3. Deactivate the PPPoE function of your private router.
  4. Make sure that Wi-Fi is activated on your private router.

Your devices can now connect to your private router over Wi-Fi and obtain an IP address from the b-box.

Using your router with the router functionality

Want to use your private router to manage your own network? Follow these steps:

  1. Connect your private router via the LAN output of the b-box to the WAN input of the private router.
  2. Activate the DHCP function of your private router.
  3. Change the IP settings of your private router so they are different from those of the b-box:
    • Default gateway: Change this IP address to a different IP address than that of the b-box, for example 192.168.2.1.
    • DHCP range: change the range to a different range than that of the b-box, for example 192.168.2.2 - 192.168.2.255.
  4. Create a PPPoE session on your private router with the username and password of your Internet connection.

The devices connected to your private router will now receive an IP address from your private router instead of from the b-box. The WAN connection (e.g. for remote access) is also established via your private router.

NB: For an optimal TV experience, we recommend that you connect the decoder directly to the b-box.

Specific points to bear in mind
  • You create two separate networks. The devices connected to one network cannot "see" the other devices on the other network (e.g. wireless printers).
  • When the two Wi-Fi networks (that of the b-box and that of your private router) are activated, your device can connect to the b-box and to your own private router, depending on your location.

Tip : Consult the user manual of your private router for advanced settings. Also take a look on the Proximus forum (in French or Dutch), where our community may be able to help you.
