Synchronization problems in OneDrive for Business

If you can't sync files from your computer to OneDrive, or if the sync is too slow, the following steps will guide you through the possible solutions.

Step 1: update your OneDrive app and software

  • App: install the free sync app from Microsoft to sync files with OneDrive, online and offline. If you already use the app, make sure you have the latest update.
  • Software: OneDrive for Business is updated regularly. Read more about the OneDrive updates on Microsoft's support site.

Step 2: check the file name
OneDrive for Business doesn’t support certain characters in a file name. Avoid these characters to prevent sync problems.

Step 3: check the file size
A file that’s too large, contains too many items, or has a long access path, can’t be synced to OneDrive for Business. Respect the pre-defined limits for files.

Step 4: reset the sync connection
Sync problems can often be solved by restarting the sync connection.

Step 5: stop and restart the sync
In case of problems with the sync folder, you can stop the sync and restart it to clear the fault.
