No network abroad

Is there no network on your mobile phone when you are abroad? Change your mobile phone’s settings and check whether your device is adapted to the local network.

Change your mobile phone settings for abroad

Normally your mobile will automatically connect to another available operator as soon as you are abroad. Is this not the case, or do you prefer another foreign network? Then change the network settings of your device manually.

  • Follow the step-by-step instructions for your device to choose a network abroad. Is your device not included? Select the device that most closely resembles your device. Please note: when you go to another country or return to Belgium, it's best to let your mobile choose a network automatically, otherwise you will encounter problems.
  • Check if roaming is enabled on your device:
    iPhone or iPad:
    1. Go to Settings.
    2. Select Mobile network.
    3. Select Mobile data options.
    4. Turn data roaming on.
    Android:
    1. Go to Settings.
    2. Select Mobile networks.
    3. Turn data roaming on.
  • Reboot your device.
Please note that no networks are available in some remote areas (desert, mountains, etc.).
  • Still no network? Select the same provider 5 times in a row.
At the 5th try, a forced connection will be made and your network profile will be downloaded again.

Check whether your mobile is adapted to the local network

Other network frequencies are used in some parts of the world: 900 and 1800 MHz in Europe, 1900 MHz in North America and 850 MHz in South America and Asia. Almost all models these days are “multi-band” and switch from one frequency to another without you even noticing. But if you have an old phone, you may not be able to use it in some countries and regions. You can check the available frequencies on the manufacturer’s website.
