More info about hotspots

A Public Wi-Fi hotspot is a place where you can surf via Wi-Fi in Belgium when you are on the move (e.g. in a shop, café, etc.) without using your mobile data (5G, 4G and 3G) bundle. Public Wi-Fi is not available abroad.

When mobile data and Public Wi-Fi are both activated on your device, you will automatically be connected to a Public Wi-Fi hotspot if there is one nearby and you will keep your Internet connection during the switchover.

Who can use Public Wi-Fi?

You can use Public Wi-Fi as a Proximus customer:

  • for free if your have a Internet subscription or Pack. For each mobile subscription you have in Pack, you get an extra free access.
  • for € 5 per month if you have a mobile-only subscription. Public Wi-Fi is not available for Pay&Go cards.
  • if you have a MyProximus account and have activated your Public Wi-Fi account via the app (for mobile and tablet) or the website (for PC and Mac). A Public Wi-Fi account can only be used by 1 person simultaneously.
  • with or without Proximus SIM card, but not on a SIM card of another operator.

How does Public Wi-Fi work?

If you have a Proximus Internet subscription, your modem, by default, serves as a hotspot for other users (except Internet Box and b-box connected to fiber). Your modem has 2 Wi-Fi signals:

  1. A private Wi-Fi signal that is secured and used for your home network. This signal always gets priority over the public Wi-Fi signal.
  2. A public Wi-Fi signal that is accessible for everyone that has access to Public Wi-Fi hotspots.

As the visitor of a hotspot, you are surfing at a maximum speed of 50 Mbps.

As the owner of the hotspot, you don't need to worry:

  • Activating the hotspot on your modem does not affect the quality of your connection or TV signal. We limit the number of visitors on a hotspot, as well as their usage.
  • You don't pay any costs for visitors using your hotspot.
  • You are not responsible for the actions of visitors on your hotspot.
  • You can turn off the hotspot of your modem at any time if you wish to do so.
