Questions about hybrid work?

From a technical perspective, the digital workplace is a secure and virtualized platform, equivalent to a traditional office environment but enriched with business applications, cloud infrastructure, and other essential technologies. It allows companies to shift work to this virtual space, providing their employees with access to all the necessary applications, data, and collaboration tools to optimize their performance.

As cybercrime statistics continue to rise each year, organizations are faced with the need to develop a security strategy for their digital workplace. This is to protect their reputation, data, know-how, and knowledge against threats such as phishing, hacking, and other security risks.

Hybrid work refers to various forms of collaboration within an organization. The different places where employees do their work make their work hybrid.

Thanks to advances in digital workplace technologies, people can work from home, at the office, or on the go (e.g., at a client's site, in public transport, etc.). Employees have access to their data and applications on various devices. Who hasn't answered an email or participated in a video conference on their smartphone?

Gartner defines Workplace-as-a-Service, abbreviated as WPaaS, as outsourced services for managing the workplace environment. As a client, you determine which operational tasks related to managing your hybrid workspace are entrusted to an external service provider. These services can encompass various aspects, from providing mobile devices (laptops, smartphones, and tablets) to managing the software installed on these devices (lifecycle management), securing these devices, providing technical support to employees, and much more.

The cost of these services is billed as fixed fees per user. The key advantage of WPaaS is that it allows your IT teams to focus on higher-value activities, while operational tasks related to managing the workspace are expertly handled by external service providers.

Mobile Device Management (MDM) refers to a comprehensive set of technologies, policies, and practices designed to manage and secure mobile devices within an organization. This includes centralized management and control of smartphones, tablets, and other mobile devices used by employees to ensure their efficient and secure use.

MDM solutions provide a centralized dashboard that allows administrators to manage a fleet of devices, streamline updates and patches, and ensure that devices remain up to date with the latest security measures.

Additionally, MDM allows for the separation of personal and work-related data on devices through containerization (dual persona), preserving employee privacy while maintaining the security of business-related information.

While both terms are closely related and often used interchangeably, there are a few differences:

  • Mobile Device Management (MDM) primarily focuses on managing and securing mobile devices within an organization. This includes centralized administration, configuration, and monitoring of mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. MDM solutions offer features like device provisioning, applying security certificates, app installation, and remote management. The main goal of MDM is to ensure the security and control of devices used for business purposes.
  • Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) is a broader concept that encompasses not only device management but also mobile app management and mobile content management. It includes MDM but extends to Mobile Application Management (MAM) and Mobile Content Management (MCM). EMM solutions offer features like app distribution, app security, content distribution, data loss prevention, and collaboration tools.

Learn more about MDM and EMM

Mobile Threat Defense (MTD) solutions are typically integrated into Mobile Device Management (MDM) or Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) platforms. Their purpose is to provide an integrated security framework for managing and protecting mobile devices within an organization.

The concept of MTD refers to a set of security measures, technologies, and practices designed to safeguard mobile devices (laptops, smartphones, tablets, etc.), their applications, and the data stored on them from various vulnerabilities. The goal of MTD is to identify, mitigate, and prevent threats, including malware, phishing attacks, network vulnerabilities, data leaks, device spoofing, and unauthorized access. It uses a layered approach that combines proactive threat detection, real-time monitoring, and rapid incident response to protect mobile endpoints and the sensitive information they handle.
