Why should we all recycle our mobile phones?
In addition to the ecological aspect, there's also an important human aspect to it. Indeed, the raw materials come from mines in the Congo, amongst others. Unfortunately, exploitation, corruption and war are still par for the course there.
Despite the fact that such massive exploitation is not actually necessary. Indeed, did you know that only 5% of all old mobile phones are recycled? This means that in Belgium's case for example, there are more than 3 million old mobile phones lying around in drawers. Whereas 90% of those materials could simply be reused.
To give you an idea of the proportions: recycling these phones would deliver 30 tons of copper alone.
This is why Proximus has launched a program to call on as many individuals and companies as possible to take part in this urban mining effort. Proximus has set itself the target of collecting 120,000 phones in 2022... and to recycle them thanks to its collaboration with Out Of Use, Brainscape and Umicore. It's high time to act, bring back your old phones and share the movement around you!
