You can switch to a free Wi-Fi network whenever possible. If there is no Wi-Fi network nearby, then you can always use a Wi-Fi ‘Hotspot’ for free Internet access. The biggest Wi-Fi community in Belgium is provided via Proximus and Fon and includes over one million hotspots in Belgium alone. Worldwide, there are over 19 million.
Making your smartphone a local hotspot, and therefore providing internet access when you are on the move to other connected devices such as your laptop or tablet via ‘tethering’ is also a very useful technique. But it will also use your data bundle, so only switch on this function as you need it.
Apps and software on your smartphone that are automatically updated can use up a lot of data if you are connected to the mobile network. It is best to start these updates yourself, when you are connected to a Wi-Fi network. How do you do that?
By managing your storage, you can see exactly how much data your apps use. By automatically uploading photos and videos, you will see that apps such as LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. use a great deal. So it is better to switch off this function. Here’s an example.
Facebook on Android:
Facebook on iPhone:
In addition, when streaming videos or music, it is best to choose a lower quality than high definition.
Push notification messages tell you when an app on your smartphone is active. Apps which you may not be using at first sight, still send you reminders such as “Go and exercise”. These apps usually work ‘in the background’. You can make sure they do not use any data.
An application using “location-based services” that runs permanently can use up huge amounts of data without you even noticing. So switch off the location-based services if you don’t need them.
Android and iOS record how much data you have used in the last month.
Thanks to the MyProximus application, you can obtain an overview of your calls, messages (SMS and MMS), and Internet usage at any time, with a single click. Download the MyProximus application onto your mobile phone, smartphone or tablet. You will find this application on Google Play Store, App Store, etc. You can also download MyProximus via Wi-Fi but for this you need to surf at least once a month via 3G.
Proximus also sends you text messages when you have exceeded your data limit.
