The network of cameras that the police have been using since 2009 will be expanded with more fixed cameras. A total of 12 surveillance cameras and 14 ANPR cameras have already been installed. Another 5 surveillance cameras and 5 ANPR cameras will be added this year. The ANPR cameras register licence plates on incoming and outgoing traffic 24 hours a day. All access routes into the police zone are checked. This way the police service immediately receives information about stolen or marked vehicles, drivers with convictions etc. The local police want to reduce thefts and detect uninsured or uninspected vehicles.
More and more local police zones are introducing ANPR and surveillance cameras to increase security in their municipality. They are choosing solutions from Proximus for these. The Schede-Leie zone – including the municipalities De Pinte, Gavere, Nazareth and St-Martens-Latem – also decided to invest in a camera network.
