We expect promising solutions from emerging technologies, with AI, blockchain, Internet of Things and big data as the catalysts. Algorithms can be used to predict behavior. The technological cleverness that this produces will also benefit companies. But attitudes will need to change, too. Literally every company and every individual can make the difference.
These days, our sat navs work out the best routes without congestion, but the car is not necessarily the most suitable form of transport. Companies like Be-Mobile are working on technical solutions to traffic flow issues.
BU Manager Tolling & Logistics Gerd Nees: “We take account of all available forms of transport. It is perfectly possible that you may reach your destination faster if you first drive to the railway station in your car, then take a train and cover the last part of your journey with an electric bike or a car-sharing vehicle. Today’s employers could include this sort of sustainable mobility in their mobility strategy far more.”
As well as home-work traffic, there is freight transport, of course. This is a huge loss-making item for logistics companies. Gerd Nees: “There is also a need for solutions at the logistics level.
For example by taking account of congestion or road accidents along the route, trucks could spend less time travelling and this would reduce CO2 emissions and diesel consumption. In addition, our ‘smart’ solution learns from what happens. When planning routes, account is already taken of the traffic information we provide so that we inform our customers in advance of what they can expect on the way and so ultimately they waste even less time.”
You may know Be-Mobile from the 4411 parking app. In addition to this fringe activity, Be-Mobile analyzes big data from across Europe: 25 million vehicles and their journeys. Based on these disrupted traffic flows, the Belgian company is developing far-ranging technological solutions.
