Public, private or hybrid cloud?
Published on 12/12/2019 in Inspire
We rely on the cloud now more than ever: for applications and data storage. But not all clouds are the same. Do you know the difference between the public, the private and the hybrid cloud?
The idea behind the cloud is simple. In the cloud you make use of IT services without the need for your own infrastructure. The choice is yours. Either you purchase the services from a cloud provider, or you create your own infrastructure. You can also choose the best of both worlds.

What is a public cloud?
A public cloud relies on a shared infrastructure. You use a provider’s cloud services together with other people. All the hardware, software and other infrastructure are the property of the provider, like Microsoft Azure for instance. Users purchase the services via the internet and share the infrastructure with other users. The main advantage is that you only pay for the services you use. You don’t have access to the physical location of the hardware and you don’t need to invest in infrastructure maintenance and updates.
What is a private cloud?
A private cloud is the opposite of a public cloud. The hardware is located in a completely separate cloud environment for your use only. This can be done by using your own business infrastructure or through an external cloud provider, whereby the service provider manages the infrastructure for you. Personnel in various branches can consult applications with one network connection.
What is a hybrid cloud?
The hybrid cloud combines the benefits of both types of cloud. It contains an on-premise infrastructure as well as a public cloud section. It allows a business to allocate applications and data to a specific cloud in a very targeted way. Frequently used applications, such as webmail, are typically stored in a public cloud, while confidential company data that require strict security are often housed in a private cloud.
