New mid-range phone from Samsung: the Galaxy A8

Comments

After weeks of rumors, we finally know more about the Samsung Galaxy A8. The latest member of the family shows a lot of similarities to South Korean company’s flagship, the Galaxy S8. The new sub-top device will be on sale in Belgium from early January.

Screen and design

Just like the Galaxy S8, the new A8 boasts a premium design and a huge Infinity Display that takes up almost the whole front of the phone. At 5.6 inches, it is only very slightly smaller than the 5.8-inch screen of its bigger brother, but it offers the same aspect ratio of 18.5:9. That’s a little longer than a standard 16:9 screen and is actually very nice.

Of course, there are differences too: the A8 doesn’t have the rounded screen edges of the flagship model (but the bezels are very narrow) and the resolution is a little lower. The Super AMOLED Display has 1,080 x 2,220 pixels, compared with 2,960 x 1,440 for the Galaxy S8.

Cameras

Another eye catcher on the A8, quite literally, is the double selfie camera on the front, with 16 and 8 megapixels respectively. You choose which lens to use depending on the type of photo you want to take. For instance, one of the cameras takes selfies with a hazy background, while the other is great for portrait photos with a sharp background.

There is a 16-megapixel camera with an f/1.7 lens aperture on the back. Thanks to this – for this price category – wide aperture, the sensor picks up a lot of light, so you can still take lovely photos, even when the light conditions are less than perfect, with more details and less noise.

Just like the Galaxy S8, the newcomer has Live Focus, a function that you can use to make the background of a photo blurred in a very natural manner. An extra little trick: you can apply this so-called bokeh effect both while you are taking the shot and afterwards.

Other specifications

The Galaxy A8 runs on a fast octa-core processor helped by 4 gigabytes of working and 32 GB of storage memory. This storage memory can easily be expanded to 256 GB by adding a microSD memory card. The Galaxy operating system is still Android 7.1.1, but in mid-2018 this is expected to be upgraded to the latest 8.0 version, also known as Android Oreo.

Other features worth mentioning are the 3,000mAh battery with Fast Charging technology, the phone’s water- and dust-resistance with IP68 certification (the device can stay under water to a depth of 1.5 meters for 30 minutes) and its compatibility with Gear VR, the Samsung virtual reality headset. Gadgets like a fingerprint scanner, NFC (for easier connection to wireless devices) and a modern USB C connection are included, too.

Samsung Galaxy A8

The Samsung Galaxy A8 is available in the Proximus e-shop in Black, Gold and Orchid Grey. The price is € 413.21 excl. VAT.
