Nokia 1 with new Android Oreo: go!
Don’t call the Nokia 1 just a budget smartphone. It is one of the first devices to run on Android Oreo Go edition, a brand-new operating system that performs unexpectedly well in this price category.

Screen and Design

The Nokia 1 is one of the five new telephones announced by the Finnish parent company, HMD Global, at the MWC in Barcelona at the end of February. It is the basic model in the range. The 4.5-inch screen is fairly small by today’s standards but the quality is great. That’s because of the so-called IPS display. This technology ensures better color reproduction, a sharper contrast and wider viewing angles. Everything remains clearly visible, even when you look at the screen at a slant.

The design is very reminiscent of the Nokia Lumia phones of a few years ago, which at the time still ran on Windows Phone. In 2018, the design unfortunately seems somewhat less trendy and even rather uninspired, certainly when compared with the slightly more expensive models such as the Nokia 3 or the Nokia 5.

Android Oreo (Go edition)

The Nokia 1’s biggest eye catcher is definitely Android Go. Google’s latest operating system is based on Android 8.1, but has been fully optimized for budget smartphones with 1 GB RAM or even less working memory.

Android Go does not have any superfluous bells and whistles and many of the apps are up to 50% more compact, so the software takes up considerably less space. To give you an idea: previously, out of 8 GB internal memory, barely 2 GB remained free. With Android Go this capacity can be as much as 5 GB.

The ‘lighter’ apps demand less from the processor and the battery, too. Specially adapted applications such as Gmail Go, Maps Go and Skype Lite feel almost as smooth as the original versions on a far more expensive smartphone. What is more, you can install all the other apps from the Google Play Store on the Nokia 1, but bear in mind that apps which are too heavy can slow down the phone.

The primary camera may only have 5 megapixels, but the photos are not bad at all. We know of few – if any – smartphones in this price category that do better. The Nokia 1 does have some trouble bringing the shot into focus, as if the processing power falls just a little short here. Don’t expect miracles from the 2-megapixel selfie camera. For this, the resolution is simply not enough.

Other Specifications

Other notable features on the Nokia 1 are mainly the 4G connectivity, replaceable battery, splashproof casing and two SIM card slots. Handy for keeping private conversations and professional calls separate. One slot can also be used to expand the phone’s memory using a microSD card (up to 128 GB).

Availability and price

The Nokia 1 costs € 74.37 excluding VAT and is available in Warm Red and Dark Blue. However, the Xpress-on covers are interchangeable and come in Yellow, Azure, Pink and Gray. You will pay € 9.99 per cover.
