The Huawei P Smart

The Huawei P Smart
The Chinese mobile phone manufacturer Huawei has built up a sound reputation in a short period of time. Although initially known mainly in the lower price categories, with devices like the P10 and the Mate 10 Pro Huawei has also carved out a place in the top segment. The new P Smart combines the best of both worlds: outstanding specifications for the attractive price of €214,87.

If you just take a quick glance at the P Smart, you could confuse it with the P10. This is one of the first phones in this price category with a long, virtually edgeless screen. The result: a very sleek, attractive device that looks like a premium smartphone. The aluminum finish adds to this impression. The fingerprint sensor at the back responds very quickly.

The P Smart has a 5.7-inch LCD screen with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The result: a very sharp image. The colors look great, albeit slightly less good than with the OLED screens on the top devices. The phone can be used in sunlight without any problem thanks to the brightness of the screen.

Another striking feature for this price category: Huawei has given the P Smart a camera with two lenses. So, you can take portraits with a hazy background: the bokeh effect. One minus point here is that the algorithm that has to decide what becomes hazy and what stays sharp occasionally gets it wrong. Otherwise, the main camera has a 13-megapixel sensor, producing great photos when there is sufficient light. The selfie camera at the front has an 8-megapixel sensor. You can film videos in Full HD resolution with 30 frames per second.

The battery in this P Smart has a generous capacity of 3000 mAh. In principle, this should easily get you through the working day. Unfortunately, there is no fast charge function. It’s also a shame that the connection is a micro-USB rather than the more modern USB-C port.

Processor and multimedia

The P Smart has a working memory of 3 gigabytes and 32 gigabytes of storage space. The device runs on the HiSilicon Kirin 659 chip designed by Huawei itself. The Kirin is not the fastest in the world, but the speed is ample for everyday use. What is more, it is energy efficient. That results in a long battery life. The Android version that Huawei supplies with the phone is the most recent one: Android 8.0 Oreo. Huawei has placed its own EMUI skin over this, which is slightly inspired by Apple’s iOS and works very nicely.
