Huawei launches first smartphone with three cameras
Smartphone maker Huawei presented the P20 and P20 Pro in Paris. The rumours of the past few days were spot on: the top model does indeed have a triple Leica camera. The cheaper P20 lite was also launched at the same event.

Screen and design

The new telephones replace the Huawei P10 and P10 Plus. The difference between the P20 and the P20 Pro lies mainly in the screen size and camera technology. The P20 has been given a 5.8-inch FullView Display while the Pro version is a step higher with a 6.1-inch screen. The virtually edgeless design means that the screen takes up almost the whole front of the smartphone. Just like the iPhone X, the P20 series has a little nick in the screen at the top. The front camera and a few sensors are integrated into this so-called ‘notch’.

Cameras in abundance

The main eye-catcher is the triple Leica camera on the Huawei P20 Pro, which is a world first. The optics include a color sensor of no less than 40 megapixels, a 20-megapixel black-white camera and a little 8-megapixel one with a 3x optic zoom. What’s more with ISO values up to 102.400, the P20 Pro is especially designed to take photos in poor light.

The Huawei P20 has an updated double camera of 12 MP (color) and 20 MP (black-white). The pixels on the sensor are slightly bigger than on the P10, which mainly results in better photos when the light is not as good. The P20 and P20 Pro share the same 24-megapixel selfie camera which, according to Huawei, excels in portrait photography.

Artificial intelligence

Just like the Huawei Mate 10 Pro introduced in October, the P20 series has a touch of artificial intelligence, AI. This technology, a component of the Kirin 970 octa-core processor, mainly helps you to take better photos. For instance, the AI chip can recognize 19 different scenarios and objects: from flowers in the garden to pets or the food on your plate. For all these situations, the camera automatically chooses the best settings, so that as a photographer you no longer have to worry out this. According to Huawei, the AI also results in more attractive selfies, better image stabilization on night photos and ‘intelligent suggestions’ when taking group photos and landscapes.

Other specifications

The new top smartphones run on Android 8.1 Oreo and have a powerful battery of 4.000mAh (P20 Pro) and 3,400mAh (P20). Also worth noting is the possibility to project onto a bigger screen wirelessly and the Smart Screen function to display two apps alongside one another. The main features of the P20 lite are the 5.84-inch FullView screen, the two cameras (front and back) of 16 MP, the 3,000mAh battery and Android 8.0 as the operating system.

Availability and prices

The Huawei P20 is available from 6 April and costs € 649. The Pro version will be in stores from 13 April at € 899. If you buy the device before 16 April, you’ll receive a Bose QuietComfort headset worth € 379.95. Finally, the Huawei P20 lite is available immediately and has a price tag of € 369.
