What are the benefits of optical fiber for your business?

Published on 05/01/2021 in Tech, tips & tricks

Proximus is fully committed to fiber and gives a large number of businesses access to this fixed communication network of the future. This makes Proximus the only operator in Belgium to extend fibre all the way to the heart of companies and homes. By 2028, a total of up to 4.2 million homes and businesses will be able to be connected to fiber. But what does this mean for your business ?

What are the benefits of optical fiber for your business?

Fiber is the network of the future: thanks to unrivalled and reliable speeds, with equal upload and download times, fiber is an enabler for new ways of working, resulting in very high customer satisfaction.

Above all, a fiber network is extremely stable: it allows all employees and family members to connect to the Internet at the same time, without interruptions.

Cloud, IoT and video: new and emerging applications

Fiber enables technologies such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, connected objects or virtual reality, as these applications need to be supported by a high-performance network.

In the coming years, data traffic will continue to grow exponentially, mainly driven by video and cloud applications and by the Internet of Things (IoT). As a pioneer in network technologies, Proximus wants to anticipate its customers’ needs and prepare its infrastructure for the future.

Digital revolution

The fiber roll-out heralds a new phase of the digital revolution. Thanks to fiber, residents and businesses will gain access to the most advanced digital services, thus benefiting growth and employment in Belgium. With increasingly popular applications such as teleworking and videoconferencing, a fast, stable and reliable network connection is paramount. This network also opens up a world of new opportunities for the further digitalization of cities to become "smart cities". In time, fiber networks will become an essential component of the urban infrastructure everywhere, comparable to water or electricity.

At least 70% fiber coverage

It is because of all these applications that Proximus, a pioneer in fiber for many years, launched the "Fiber for Belgium" investment plan in December 2016, to roll out fiber to businesses and urban centers in Belgium.

A long-term investment of billions of euros

In order to achieve this objective, Proximus has announced that it is speeding up the process by bringing forward its investment plan. But also via fiber network construction partners: Fiberklaar in Flanders and Unifiber in Wallonia. Also via the use of Ores' electricity poles in Wallonia. At the same time, the planned coverage rate has been revised upwards, with the ultimate goal of achieving a fiber network covering 70% of the national territory by 2028.
