Marco Polo is a historical figure that captures our imagination. So it’s no wonder that Netflix seized the opportunity to run a series about the Italian explorer. The result is a gripping story of the adventures of Marco Polo at the court of Kublai Khan in 13th-century Mongolia. This series is full of sexual intrigue, greed and rivalry.
With a historical epic such as this, everything has to be just right: imposing sets, period costumes. You can’t fail to be impressed by this series. Marco Polo grabs you by the nape of the neck and doesn’t let you go.
Marco Polo was a revolutionary in his time. The Venetian set out on exploratory travels and discovered unknown parts of the world. After his return, he recorded his findings in “Il Milione”, a book with a wealth of information about the Far East (China, India and Persia). Marco Polo described Eastern customs and practices and accumulated vast geographical knowledge that would later be used in cartography. Moreover, he heralded the era of great explorers such as Columbus.
Marco Polo was born to travel. His father, Niccolò, travels the world as a merchant. When he takes his son on one of his voyages, they fall into the hands of Kublai Khan, the Emperor of Mongolia. The series focuses on this period and captures the viewer’s imagination with the splendid Chinese dynasties. Branded an “epic” by critics, the series also has memorable visual effects.
After Marco Polo and his father are taken prisoner, the latter decides to pledge his son as collateral for his release. Kublai Khan is in the middle of a campaign to conquer China and teaches Marco about Eastern culture and the art of war. Marco Polo also fights in battles and has to face dangerous challenges. Moreover, his loyalty and integrity are tested.
Due to the overwhelming success of the first season, a second season of Marco Polo is in the pipeline. The series is therefore following in the footsteps of other successful Netflix series such as “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black”. Season 2 will be released in 2016. Keep an eye out!
