10 awesome hidden features of iOS 10

Tips & tricks from…by Peter07/10/2016

There's a lot more to iOS 10 than you think.

iOS 10 is packed with new features. Apple didn't call it "the biggest upgrade ever" for nothing. Although many new features are easy to find, there’s a lot of cool stuff hidden under the bonnet. I picked out the best features for you and present my top 10 below!

  1. Hi widgets!

Apple finally added something that Android users have had for ages. But that doesn't make it any less special. Swipe left on the home screen and you will see widgets on your screen, such as the weather, calendar, and battery status. Want to modify them? Tap "Edit" and select a widget. You can also change the order by pressing down on a widget and dragging it.

  2. Loads of categories in Apple Photos

And not a moment too soon! The photo album in your iPhone is finally on a par with Google Photos. It now also recognizes objects and people, so you can search for mountain pictures, for example, snapshots with water in them, or all your group photos.

  3. Force Touch now even works on the control panel

This one's only for people with an iPhone 6s or 7. In case you didn’t know, the control panel is the screen that appears when you swipe upwards from the bottom. Here, you can now adjust the screen brightness or the timer by pressing or holding.

  4. Unsubscribe from newsletters with a tap

Even I get way too many newsletters in my mailbox, every single day. But now you can directly unsubscribe from these e-mails in the Mail app. This app recognizes that you are subscribed to a newsletter and gives you the possibility to unsubscribe at the top of the screen.

  5. Dude, where’s my car?

One of my favorites. Every day, I drive my car to the station, and by the end of the day, I've already forgotten where I parked it! The latest iOS can tell when you’re in your car and when you’re on foot. So it knows where you left your car. Simply ask Siri where your car is, and you'll immediately receive a map with directions.

  6. Send a WhatsApp using Siri…

The next feature also works with Siri. You can now use her in WhatsApp. First, you have to install the latest version of WhatsApp and enable "App support" by going to "Siri" via the settings. Then, you can begin. Simply tell her whom you want to send a message to and what should be in the message. Quick and easy!

  7. Or use the new Message features

If you use Message or iMessage, there is now a whole range of new features. For instance, you can send full-screen effects such as confetti for a birthday. There are also stickers that you can put anywhere in a message. And if your turn your screen to landscape, you can send handwritten texts. As icing on the cake, you can also send a message in invisible ink: the recipient can only read it by swiping over it.

  8. Close all the tabs in Safari in one go …

Before, you had to swipe away each tab separately. Such a nuisance! But now you can close everything in one go by pressing and holding the tab icon at the bottom of the screen. You will then see the function for closing all the tabs.

  9. or close all notifications in one go

Also handy if you want a clean screen and a clean mind. You can now get rid of a whole series of notifications in one go. Just tap on the cross at the top right of the screen and you're done!

  10. A good night’s sleep, thanks to Wake alarm

The alarm in your iPhone now has an extra feature, the Wake alarm, which checks if you've gotten enough sleep. And Bedtime tells you when to go to bed. Nice reminder. It doesn't provide any sleep analysis though (for that, there are other apps in de App Store).

So, tons of new stuff. If you’re not sure how to update your iPhone to the new iOS 10, read my previous article where I explain everything step by step.
