New open-source platform for European and Brazilian smart cities

Newsby One magazine03/04/2015

31 cities in the EU and Brazil have signed a deal to improve the service they provide to their citizens through an open-source platform. This innovation should significantly improve these smart cities’ service.

During CEBIT 2015, 25 cities in six EU countries (Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Portugal and Spain) and six cities in Brazil presented the Open & Agile Smart Cities Task Force (OASC). The initiative aims to bring smart city services within the reach of local governments. It concerns services in the areas of transport, energy efficiency, environment and e-health. Cities can share their open data with each other through OASC. This way, they can develop apps and tools to keep their citizens informed. A typical example is an app with traffic information for commuters. The newly developed systems can be used by all participating cities. Advantage: cost savings and a better service for citizens and businesses.

IT platform shares data
The platform that will make all this possible is FIWARE, an innovation platform financed by the EU. This open-source platform forms an alternative to existing internet platforms. It’s constructed from cloud-based building blocks that were developed in the EU. These can be used to develop a wide range of applications, from e-health to transport and disaster management. Various applications have already been created: an alarm system for earthquakes or smart taxi apps. Thanks to FIWARE, startups and app developers in the participating cities have access to a worldwide market for smart-city services.

The participating European cities :
  • Brussels
  • Ghent
  • Antwerp
  • Copenhagen
  • Helsinki
  • Milan
  • Lisbon
  • Porto
  • Valencia
  • Malaga
  • Seville
