Belfius Smart City Awards 2015

Newsby One magazine04/12/2015

The very first presentation of the Belfius Smart City Awards 2015 took place in Brussels in the presence of about 200 guests on December 2. The city of Antwerp took home first prize for the project ‘Stadslab2050 – Energy for the heart of Antwerp’.

The Antwerp project ‘Stadslab2050’ aims to make Antwerp a sustainable city. Projects leading to concrete actions have been outlined by means of collaborations between various businesses, residents, the government, and Antwerp organizations. One of these was ‘Energy for the heart of Antwerp,’ in which Smart Grid Flanders, Unizo Antwerp City and Eandis let the city council quickly take action on energy saving and promotion of sustainable energy in a test area of the city center.

The pace of technology
Speaker Kent Larson, director of the Media Lab’s Changing Places – part of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology – provided one of the high points of the evening. His highly inspiring look at technology and scientific research on contemporary and future urban development, with a view to all aspects (accommodation, living, sustainability, etc.), was a real eye-opener for those present.

Furthermore, the CEO of Belfius announced a new edition of the awards for 2016. This time participants will be divided into three categories: large cities, medium-sized and smaller entities, and the business community active in the Smart Cities.

Winners of Agoria Smart City Technology Awards
During the festive evening four other cities besides Antwerp received prizes. Mechelen (Lunavision project), Liège (Vélocité project), Ghent (Onlinetool energy-efficient renovation project) and the Brussels Regional Public Service (Fix My Street.Brussels project) received an award for the best ‘technology’ urban projects from the Agoria technology federation.
